Cambridge Centre for Teaching and Learning

The Student-Led Teaching Awards ceremony was held on 9 May in the University Combination Room. As Professor Graham Virgo, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, observed in his opening address, the Student-Led Teaching Awards are special because they are ‘student-led, student-organised, student-voted, and student-decided’. The only way to win a Student-Led Teaching Award is to be nominated by the students themselves. The Awards are organised by the Cambridge University Students’ Union (CUSU), who this year received 590 nominations from students eager to reward and celebrate the outstanding efforts of lecturing, teaching, supervising, teaching support and pastoral support staff from across the collegiate university. Dr Stuart Eves, tutor and Director of Studies at Selwyn College and winner of an award in the pastoral support category, commented that ‘it’s a really lovely thing, because it’s nominated by students’.

All recipients described themselves as very proud to have been nominated by their students, and several were observed wiping away a tear as their students presented their awards and described just how much of a difference their efforts had made. As Roberta Huldisch, CUSU Education Officer and organiser of the student-led teaching awards, said, ‘everyone nominated has had the opportunity to inspire students and has had an impact on their time at Cambridge. That is something to be very proud of.’
