Engage in Learning is a theory- and practice-informed supervisor development programme on building supportive learning relationships with undergraduate and postgraduate students. In four two-hour workshops, supervisors explore challenges and approaches to building supportive supervisory relationships through dialogical learning activities. Readings are provided prior to each workshop. The programme emphasises building on supervisors’ own experiences. Between each workshop supervisors  observe and keep a written log of specific experiences of supervision; these form a basis for reflection in the subsequent workshop.

Target audience

Supervisors of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students of the University of Cambridge.  Participants typically have a minimum of three to five years’ experience of teaching in higher education and commit to attend all four workshops.  This course is not open to PhD students.

The intended aims and benefits

  • a platform to discuss one’s own practical experiences of supervision in a structured environment;
  • a solidified understanding of the importance and benefits of supportive supervisory relationships;
  • refined awareness and skills to build supportive relationships and recognise and deal with difficult situations;
  • opportunities to develop a network of supervisors with other participants on the course.

Following a successful pilot in 2016-17, we are now offering two separate instances of this programme:
