Precious Ndukuba

Winner, Inclusive Practice

Precious Ndukuba was nominated for her unrelenting efforts to improve the inclusiveness of her Department, spearheading many diverse new initiatives in support of her peers.

Since coming to Cambridge, Precious has been a relentless force in both Caius and in the Department of Architecture. In her first year she immediately volunteered to be the student rep for the Department. Attending numerous student-staff committee meetings, she relentlessly advocated for more proactive outreach and inclusive representation for BAME students. She volunteered to speak with applicants and put together several papers with concrete suggestions to make the Department a more welcoming place.

She has been instrumental in setting up our new “Decolonise the Curriculum” student-staff committee, Unfold. As part of the Unfold team she helped in creating and running a talk series for prominent BAME or Global South practitioners, and superbly organising fortnightly workshops where students and staff discuss and co-propose cutting-edge initiatives. Within this, she focused on ways to adapt our current ways of teaching within the Department. Several of these will now be implemented by our Head of Department, including restructuring the first-year “History of Architecture” course to be a “History of European Architecture” course sitting alongside a new “History of Underrepresented Architectures” course.

Finally, noticing missed opportunities for undergraduates and postgraduates to learn from each other, Precious developed an MPhil-BA workshops - "Lunch with MAUD" - and a co-mentoring Department space / café. It is not an understatement to say that Precious has been an inspiring and transformational force in the Department of Architecture and at Caius College. She has a unique ability to draw people together who one would not expect could be drawn together.

In 2020-21, Precious was a third-year Undergraduate reading Architecture at Gonville & Caius College.
