Highly Commended, Innovative Practice

Rachel and Emily designed and developed a new e-learning module for fourth-year medical students on ‘Professionalism on Social Media’. This is an area which is very important for medical students and doctors to understand and feel confident in, particularly as the way we behave online and use social media is always changing. Until now there as been little teaching on this subject as part of the medical school curriculum, being brief and focused on the rather than the more subtle.

Supported by Dr Elizabeth Fistein, Rachel and Emily created the module to fill this gap. It includes guidance from the General Medical Council, interactive examples and a series of practice Situational Judgement Test questions (which feature in the final-year exam on professionalism). Having now run for two years the module is very well received. Students commend it for being well written, engaging in its interactivity, for providing peer-led teaching, and for its humour and relatability. The flexibility of an e-module was also appreciated, particularly in light of the pandemic and remote teaching.

Emily and Rachel are collecting quantitative and qualitative feedback to further improve the module. This initiative is a great example of students identifying a gap in the curriculum, coordinating with Faculty members, designing and implementing a teaching session which is useful for fellow students and can be repeated in future years, and evaluating it for improvement.

In 2020-21, Rachel and Emily were both sixth-year Undergraduates reading Medicine at Gonville & Caius College.
