Slide Accessibility Guidance
We ask that speakers at our events try to incorporate the following guidance points when creating slides (if using) to maximise the accessibility for as many people as possible.
- Ensure there is good contrast between your text and background, and in any images. Be aware that a projector may wash out your colours further, and that lighting in the room is not always optimal.
- Do not use white as a background colour: black text on a white background can be particularly difficult to parse. We recommend using either navy text on an off-white background, or light text on a dark background.
- Use sans serif fonts, at least for the body of the text.
- Make the font size as large as possible and keep the text per slide to a minimum with as much space in between lines as you can. The specific font size will of course depend on room and screen size, but generally 18pt is considered the absolute minimum.
We recommend being conscious of colour-blindness when choosing colours for your slides and graphics, and in particular ensuring that information is never conveyed through colour alone. For example, use hatching as well as colour to distinguish bars on a chart, or ask your audience to look at "the red circle in the top-right" rather than just referring to "the red circle".
If your slides will be shared directly with participants before or after the event, we also ask that you ensure any images have helpful alt text or are marked as decorative as appropriate, that the reading order for each slide is correct, and that each slides has a title element.
