College Representation

Winner of the College Representation award, Miguel Roe was nominated on behalf of the Pembroke College Junior Parlour Committee, in his capacity as President.

This particular Committee has been especially notable, among those I have worked with in my three years, for their remarkable dedication and hard work in contributing to tangible enhancements in the learning environment at Pambroke.

They have transformed the response rate for the College's Teaching and Learning Questionnaire, which typically generates a response rate around 20%. With the work of the JPC this jumped to 64%, allowing granular information on Direction of Studies and supervision to be obtained, giving the most comprehensive insight on first years' views on the learning environment and provision at the College in working memory. While the data provided significant reassurance they also enabled tangible enhancements in a notable proportion of subjects, particularly in supervision delivery, and the College to better focus the provision of transitional study skill support in the coming academic year.

They have also enhanced pastoral and non-academic support provision across the undergraduate College community. This is the bed-rock on which academic excellence is built. The JPC initiated the idea of a comprehensive review of provision in this regard, and gave practical assistance in the design, implementation and analysis of a comprehensive consultation and survey. Some examples of outcomes include adjustments being made to Freshers Week to benefit social and academic adjustment, improved accssibility of information on College provision of pastoral and counselling support, improvements to informal study spaces, a prioritised approach to top-up training for Tutors, and ways to optimise student-Tutor interactions in the longer term.

Miguel Roe is a second-year Undergraduate reading History.
